Insurance advice for Turkey and Northern Cyprus

With the pound in our pockets shrinking ever smaller. More and more people are deciding to look outside the euro zone this year, for a better holiday deal. And many are choosing Turkey and Northern Cyprus as a cheaper alternative.

But do not be penny wise and pound foolish,and forget to book full holiday insurance, with good medical cover included.

Why. Because, although Northern Cyprus and some western areas of Turkey, are part of mainland Europe. And Turkey has ambitions to join the European Union. Turkey has no reciprocal health aggreement with the U.K.

What does this mean for your typical British holidaymaker ? It means that were you to get ill, have an accident and need medical treatment, on holiday in Turkey or Northern Cyprus. You would not be covered by your E.H.I.C. card.

So you will need to buy, travel / holiday insurance.

However in Southern Cyprus you can use your E.H.I.C. card. But you will only receive the same healthcare service as a local cypriot. Not the same level of treatment as you would in the U.K. So you will still need full travel insurance.

Another thing many people do not realise, is that in some countries you must carry your EHIC card on your person at all times. If you were to have an accident, and had to be rushed to hospital for treatment, and you did not have your EHIC card with you at the time, you would be charged for the treatment, even if your card was back in your hotel room. you would still have to claim the money back when you returned home.

The levels of cover will vary between insurers. But most should offer a good level of cover,and include.

Emergency medical and travel expenses.

Cancellation charges.

Delayed departure.

Abandonment of journey due to delay.

Curtailment charges.

Personal possessions.

Emergency replacement items.

Personal money,

Personal liability.

Legal expenses.

Read your insurance policy document thoroughly,and make sure that you understand all the insurance information.
